About Mountain View

Bilingual Programs

Sun logoMountain View provides both English as a Second Language and Maintenance Bilingual programs to qualifying students. We believe if students develop literacy in their first language they will be more successful in their second language. Almost all classroom teachers have the endorsement to teach either TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) or the Bilingual endorsement, to teach students in their home language, Spanish. Mountain View provides 45 minutes of TESOL a day to students during their literacy block, and an additional 45 minutes of bilingual literacy daily with either teacher from the bilingual support department or from the classroom teacher if he/she has the endorsement.

Everyday Math

Everyday Math is the math program used by all elementary schools in APS. It follows research by the NCTM (National Council for Teaching Mathematics) and has six strands: number and numeration, operations and computation, data and chance, measurement and reference frames, geometry, and patterns, functions, and algebra. The program builds on itself, spiraling on these six strands through the grade levels.

Treasures is a reading program which combines whole group, small group, and independent reading activities into the reading block. The six components of literacy are taught, which include phonemic awareness, phonics, oral language, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. MV students have at least 90 minutes of literacy a day.
